[music] Hayes Carll - She Left Me for Jesus

"If Texas-born Hayes Carll had any thicker of a Southern twang in his voice, you'd need a translator to get through his raspy country-rock. She Left Me for Jesus is a whisky-addled sing-along for the final moments before last call. On one level, the tune is a dumbed-down satire of a simple-minded roughneck who is threatened by his girlfriend's newfound love of Jesus. But at the basic level - it's just a perfectly greasy bit of countrified soul." -- iTunes Store

Smarter than the average Texan (& I should know, I grew up in El Paso), Carll has the soulfulness and honest take on life that reminds me of a young Willie Nelson. Folks criticized him for his brash idealism and dark humor, but only those who stand out from the crowd become great leaders/artists/legends. As it happens, Carll is a fairly brilliant musician, too, and it is nothing short of a pleasure to listen to the variety of subjects and range of moods. If you have an I.Q. of over 20, you are bound to find something you'll like on this album.

A shame you put a red wiggler on Carll's hook, when he's got a pint or two of fat nightcrawlers. Caught his set at Cedar St. during SXSW and found I had been missing out on a great up'n'coming Texas songwriter. Give him a second cast, and he'll steal your bobber.

I had a hearty belly laugh, played it several times and immediately called a friend to tell him and will pass it along further. I'll send it to my mother. It is a beautiful piece of work. It is a humorous take on the country music belly aching song style with a good humored nudge to the overly selfeighteous who take themselves too seriously. I think Jesus might just approve with a smile and giggle.

This song is about a guy who thinks he girl is leaving him for someone named Jesus. It has nothing to do with wanted to kill God's son...

I lived in Houston for 4 years after college, and saw Hayes play a lot of ice houses. He is an insanely gifted artist, and should be given a fair chance.

Obviously he's good enough to be signed to a major label...

I also heard it on Imus this morning...7/25/08...and I like it. It will make you think about scripture and the words that we have always been taught about Jesus that he can make you change...it will work.
